Do you enjoy knitting, quilting, sewing, felting, etc? Bring your fibre scraps or unfinished projects for a new experience in artmaking. Repurpose them to create colourful one-of-a kind art prints on paper. Join me at Julie Rosvall’s studio in the Gaspereau Valley for this workshop. No previous experience is required and all materials are supplied. Please bring your lunch or plan to eat in nearby Wolfville. Masking required.

COLOURFUL BLOCK PRINTING

June 18th 10-4pm. $120 +HST.

Join me in the Gaspereau Valley, NS, for a fun day of carving and block printing on paper at Julie Rosvall’s studio. We’ll focus on rainbow rolls, spot inking and other colourful inking techniques. You will have choice of using Linoleum or Komatex for carving and have opportunity to hand print as well as print on a printing press. All materials will be supplied but if you have your own carving tool set please bring it along. No previous experience necessary. Please bring your own lunch or plan to head to nearby Wolfville to eat. Masking required.

Maria will be teaching a 3-day Monotype workshop at the Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre in the beautiful vacation town of St. Andrews, NB on June 21-23, 2019. Students will be creating experimental one of a kind prints using plexiglass, Akua ink and paper.  You can register for this workshop on the Sunbury Shores website directly.

Relief printmaking with Maria Doering
 July 31st – August 4th (Mon-Fri) at 9 am – 4 pm

This course is ideal for beginners as well as experienced printmakers who want a refresher in relief printmaking. Maria is a flexible instructor who adapts easily to the individual students and their skill level. This class will cover relief printing through the use of Linoleum and Komatex as materials. Students will learn all about carving tools, how to use them, mark making in black & white imagery, mixing inks, developing a colour image and its separate layers into a print through reduction and multiple blocks, registration techniques, hand printing and printing on the press. Maria will show examples of her own blocks and prints as well as other artists’ works to inspire the participants.
In this course Maria will work with you to create your own unique relief prints.

Want to try printmaking? This is the perfect class to be introduced to relief printmaking. Students will focus on mark making, textures, patterns and other ways of creating an interesting black and white image to carve into your matrix. By the end of the workshop you will walk away with your own small limited edition of prints.
No previous experience required. Maria is happy to have students of all levels in her class and will make sure it is interesting for everyone involved. It’s a fun activity to do solo or with a friend/family member. All materials and tools will be provided, please bring an apron or old t-shirt, and maybe even an image idea with you.

Join us for another fun day of printmaking at Visual Voice! Monotype is a very experimental and direct process of image creation through the use of printmaking equipment. You will create one-of-a-kind prints by removing ink from a plate with various rags, Q-tips, brushes and found materials. You may create up to 10 different images during this workshop. This workshop is especially beneficial if you enjoy drawing as we will focus on translating your drawing and painting skills into printmaking.
You can come prepared with an image idea or spend the day experimenting with found materials. You do not need previous knowledge of printmaking to participate in this workshop. Please bring an apron or old t-shirt and any thin/flat found materials like dried leaves, thread, paper cut outs. If you can’t think of anything, not to worry, there will be materials supplied as well.

Create your own colorful limited edition mini print with artist and printmaker Maria Doering. Reductive Relief Printmaking is a technique where you carve and print multiple color layers from a single matrix block. You can come with your own image ideas for a 4×4 inch – 2 color print or find inspiration during the workshop from many provided images. The year in review.In this Reflections and Resolutions Monotype Workshop you will be developing imagery that symbolizes what mattered to you in 2016 and your hopes and dreams for 2017. While taking a break from Holiday parties and preparations for New Year’s Eve this workshop is a perfect one-day meditation allowing you to look inward and express your ideas through the painterly method of Monotype printmaking. You will not be creating an edition of multiples but instead remove ink from a plate with various rags, Q-tips, and brushes and found materials to create a single print. This time we will be using larger plates than in previous workshops. Participants can expect to create 2-5 different prints during this workshop. The workshop will begin with a few simple exercises to help you shed the holiday stress and focus on your reflections. You can come prepared with image ideas or spend the day experimenting spontaneously with this much more direct and painterly printmaking technique. You do not need previous knowledge of printmaking to participate in this workshop. Please bring an apron or old t-shirt and any thin/flat found materials like dried leaves, thread, paper cut outs, and anything that may inspire your reflections and resolutions. Maria is thrilled to have been invited to spend three weeks at the Ottawa School of Art in downtown Ottawa, between August 23rd and September 10th. RESIDENCY EVENT SCHEDULE:

Tuesday, May 31st – Artistic Collaborations 101
(Min. 5 participants – Max 20 participants,  6-9 pm)
In this workshop, we will introduce participants to the idea of artistic collaboration, why it is valuable and the different approaches artists can take when working together. We will share our own methods, as well as other ways we have seen artist teams collaborate. During the workshop participants will be paired up and challenged to work on a project together in one of the many approaches. This will be a fun event that anyone can take part in with or without experience. All you need to bring is your favourite “making” materials (pencils, watercolors, yarn, etc…) and an open mind. It is a fun way to connect with other artists or take an interesting workshop with your favourite art buddy!
Wednesday, June 1st – Sketchbook Collaborations
(Min. 5 participants – Max 20 participants, 2 – 5 pm)
One wonderful artistic collaboration method that we will discuss in our first workshop is sketchbook sharing with another artist. In this workshop, we will dive deeper into this approach and you will be introduced to different methods of sketchbook collaboration and explore how this method works when artist teams live close together versus apart long distance. Participants will be paired up to start working together in small folio sketchbooks while expressing their own ideas and reacting to each other’s styles. This workshop works well on your own or to sign up with your art buddy.

Open to the public!
During this small informal reception, we would like to ask the public to come and visit us in the studio to see the results of our week long collaboration project in residence. We will briefly talk about the origins of our work and what it is like to live in separate countries while still making art together.

Starting in December Maria is going to be offering private workshops and lessons to individuals interested in Drawing and or Block printing.
