Upon popular demand Maria is offering two one day Monotype workshops in May 2018. Both workshops focus on Monotype printmaking but participants will be experimenting with different materials in each. Now that spring is finally here it will be fun to play with found plant material and experiment with the image making potential of foliage, flowers, leaves, moss, bark, etc.

The second workshop is going to focus on using textiles, and fibre textures, fabric and yarn scraps to create unusual textures and use this method as a tool to create one of a kind imagery. Both workshops are ideal for people who are sensitive to chemicals and smells as no solvents will be used and the inks are the less toxic Akua inks. Clean up will be with a dish soap and water mixture.

There are only 5 seats in each workshop, registration ahead of time is required.

SUMMER SCREEN PRINTING 
with Maria Doering

This week-long class will cover the joys of screen printing on paper with a focus on creating colourful imagery by using hand cut stencils, screen filler and possibly photo emulsion. By the end of the week Students will be comfortable with mixing inks, registering colour layers, and printing multiples. Whether or not you are looking to create limited edition posters, or make original fine art prints, this class will give you a solid foundation in the technique and information on making prints at home. No experience necessary, all levels welcome.

Materials:

Students should bring the following

• Sketchbook or notebook
• Pencil or pen
• Apron/old T-shirt
• Scotch magic tape (matte)
• Pad of newsprint
• 5-6 full sheets of Mayfair paper for proofing (available at NSCAD Art Supply Store or Deserres Art Supply Store)
• Rag paper for editioning (Stonehenge, Fabriano Rosaspina, Rives BFK, Arches…etc., no heavy textures, no water color paper)
• Recycled, clean yogurt containers with lids for mixed inks
• 1 black permapaque marker
• Box cutting knife or xacto knife

Maria is delighted to be teaching a week-long relief printmaking class at Sunbury Shores in St. Andrews, New Brunswick.

Relief printmaking with Maria Doering
 July 31st – August 4th (Mon-Fri) at 9 am – 4 pm

This course is ideal for beginners as well as experienced printmakers who want a refresher in relief printmaking. Maria is a flexible instructor who adapts easily to the individual students and their skill level. This class will cover relief printing through the use of Linoleum and Komatex as materials. Students will learn all about carving tools, how to use them, mark making in black & white imagery, mixing inks, developing a colour image and its separate layers into a print through reduction and multiple blocks, registration techniques, hand printing and printing on the press. Maria will show examples of her own blocks and prints as well as other artists’ works to inspire the participants.
In this course Maria will work with you to create your own unique relief prints.

Want to try printmaking? This is the perfect class to be introduced to relief printmaking. Students will focus on mark making, textures, patterns and other ways of creating an interesting black and white image to carve into your matrix. By the end of the workshop you will walk away with your own small limited edition of prints.
No previous experience required. Maria is happy to have students of all levels in her class and will make sure it is interesting for everyone involved. Join us for another fun day of printmaking at Visual Voice! Monotype is a very experimental and direct process of image creation through the use of printmaking equipment. You will create one-of-a-kind prints by removing ink from a plate with various rags, Q-tips, brushes and found materials. You may create up to 10 different images during this workshop. This workshop is especially beneficial if you enjoy drawing as we will focus on translating your drawing and painting skills into printmaking.
You can come prepared with an image idea or spend the day experimenting with found materials. You do not need previous knowledge of printmaking to participate in this workshop. Please bring an apron or old t-shirt and any thin/flat found materials like dried leaves, thread, paper cut outs. If you can’t think of anything, not to worry, there will be materials supplied as well.

Create your own colorful limited edition mini print with artist and printmaker Maria Doering. Reductive Relief Printmaking is a technique where you carve and print multiple color layers from a single matrix block. Monotype

Monotype is a fun and very experimental printmaking technique where instead of printing editions you only create one-of-a-kind pieces. Each week you will learn different approaches ranging from Black & White to multi-colored and multi layered Monotype prints with the use of various inks, dry media and found objects on paper. No previous experience required. Please bring sketchbook or note pad, pencil, fine point Sharpie marker and an apron or old t-shirt to the first class. Class Limit is 10.

Screenprinting

Screen printing, also known as Silkscreen or Serigraphy, is a fun printing technique that doesn’t
take too much set up to use at home. In this course, students will learn how to screen print
through the use of hand-cut stencils. The class will include exposure to different ways of cutting stencils, mixing inks, registering color layers, setting up the screen and printing.

Maria is teaching a one day reductive relief printing workshop at St. FX University in Antigonish with partnership of the Society of Antigonish Printmakers on November 26th. During this all day workshop participants will get an overview of relief printing and a specific focus on the method of Reductive Relief Printmaking. Each participant will carve an image into a matrix material, print the first layer and then carve more from the same block to print the second layer.

The last time I taught at St. FX the workshop was full within a day, so please register as soon as possible!

The year in review.In this Reflections and Resolutions Monotype Workshop you will be developing imagery that symbolizes what mattered to you in 2016 and your hopes and dreams for 2017. While taking a break from Holiday parties and preparations for New Year’s Eve this workshop is a perfect one-day meditation allowing you to look inward and express your ideas through the painterly method of Monotype printmaking. You will not be creating an edition of multiples but instead remove ink from a plate with various rags, Q-tips, and brushes and found materials to create a single print. This time we will be using larger plates than in previous workshops. Participants can expect to create 2-5 different prints during this workshop. The workshop will begin with a few simple exercises to help you shed the holiday stress and focus on your reflections. You do not need previous knowledge of printmaking to participate in this workshop. Introduction to Relief Printing
Relief printing, you may know it as Linocut or Woodcut is one of the most accessible and affordable forms of printmaking. Techniques learned in this course can easily be applied and used at home and with various materials. Students will be guided through the process of image development, image transfer to various carving matrices, carving, inking and hand printing. Once comfortable with hand printing, the instructor will introduce the class to printing with a relief printing press. Relief printing can be used for creating anything from
