EXTREMEs and Intangible: Two group shows at ICCA
Posted May 26, 2017
Maria is included in two group shows running from 27 May to 24 June at the Inverness County Centre for the Arts. Presented by the Nova Scotia Printmakers, the shows together feature over 30 Nova Scotia artists.

EXTREMEs
Farthest from the center or middle; outermost; endmost;
76 prints by 30 members of the Nova Scotia Printmakers exploring extremes in print.
Members of the Nova Scotia Printmakers have brought together works on paper for an exhibition, EXTREMEs, at the Inverness County Centre for the Arts (ICCA) in Inverness, Cape Breton, NS, on display for the month of June. Works explore the theme of extremes either by size, big or small, or by thematic exploration such as weather, politics, or the human experience.
EXTREMEs includes works that range in size from etchings on handmade paper 3.5” x 3.5”, up to a 19’ by 15’ frottage of a building on fabric. Exhibiting large scale prints alongside equally engaging small works will show the extremes that printmakers can go to create artwork. Intricate imagery created entirely using carefully placed metal letterpress ornaments, textiles knit, etched, and printed to transfer the pattern to paper, all alongside carefully rendered images drawn, carved, engraved, silkscreened or etched.
Artists with work in the show include: Tina Arsenault, Sara AvMaat, Bonnie Baker, Diana Baldwin, Mark Bovey, Diane Cardoso, Cecil Day, Maria Doering, Suzanne Gauthier, Hannah Genosko, Kate Georgallas, Carlos Comez, Bob Hainstock, Dyan Hatanaka, Erin Hollingshead, Carloe Liu, Deborah Maurer, Bob Morouney, Tony Myers, Linda Oickle, David Power, Diane Rosati, Julie Rosvall, Tamsin Sloots, Anna Syperek, Kristina Vermeulen, Sally Warren, and Charley Young
EXTREMEs will fill the main gallery of the Inverness County Centre for the Arts for the month of June, and runs concurrently with the Nova Scotia Printmakers’ curated exhibition Intangible, on display in the outer gallery.

Intangible
Over the last three years printmakers Maria Doering and Julie Rosvall have had the opportunity to organize and hang dozens of printmaking exhibitions as volunteers of the Nova Scotia Printmakers. Both quietly noticed how often printmakers with vastly different imagery and techniques were creating works that naturally fit together in a gallery setting. Small details in form or colour brought a collection together, without any consultation or collaboration happening between the artists working in different parts of the province.
Intangible is a curated exhibition of works in print by nine printmakers, all members of the Nova Scotia Printmakers, ranging from emerging to master printmakers, all women. Each piece within the show explores pattern and texture, and all have that sometimes intangible factor, that natural fit. The prints on display use a variety of fine printmaking techniques, including soft ground etchings, relief prints of found objects, linocut prints, lithography, and solar plate etchings.
Printmakers exhibiting as part of Intangible include Bonnie Baker, Melissa Charbonneau, Cecil Day, Maria Doering, Suzanne Gauthier, Jay Leblanc, Meggie Richards, Julie Rosvall, and Charley Young.
Intangible will fill the outer gallery of the Inverness County Centre for the Arts for the month of June, and runs concurrently with the Nova Scotia Printmakers’ EXTREMEs exhibition, on display in the main gallery.

Maria Doering & Fiona Chinkan – Shared Energies Project in Princeton
Posted April 11, 2017

SHARED ENERGIES: CELLS, STARS AND THE FLUIDITY BETWEEN
Fiona Chinkan & Maria Doering
Spring 2017 Anne Reeves Artists-in-Residence
Shared Energies: Cells, Stars and the Fluidity Between is a collaborative residency project between New York City-based artist Fiona Chinkan and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia-based artist Maria Doering. Having known each other for more than 14 years, Fiona and Maria will be reunited in the studio to continue work on their collaborative drawing project in the Taplin Gallery between April 7th and May 7th, 2017.
The two women have collaborated through different approaches over many years beginning with their first co-curated exhibit in 2006, titled Retrospective on Intimacy, in New Jersey and Connecticut. Shortly after, Maria moved to Canada and they continued to collaborate by mailing their drawings back and forth between New York City and Dartmouth. This ever-expanding body of work grew into the Shared Energies project, which was first exhibited during their studio residency stay in 2016 at the Inverness County Centre for the Arts in Inverness, Nova Scotia.
During their spring 2017 Anne Reeves Residency, Fiona and Maria will be elaborating on an artistic conversation, merging and reacting to both of their notions of space. Fiona interprets imagery of outer space while Maria explores the inner space of the human body. Their work juxtaposes the formation of star systems with human cellular structures while laying in emotional complexities. Their unique styles intertwine and merge in an unexpected explosion of energy through pen and ink on paper. They either draw simultaneously on the same sheet or both artists begin a drawing separately and then switch to continue working on the other’s drawing. The Taplin Gallery will be turned into their studio space where the artist duo will continue to push their explorations to large scale drawings and three dimensional installations.
Anyone is welcome to stop by the Taplin Gallery and visit the artists during their stay. Fiona and Maria are looking forward to sharing their process and progress with the community.
To follow along their progress during the residency online, please visit the artists on Instagram at @mariadoering or @fionac.nyc
The artist duo will offer two workshops:
Artistic Collaborations 101: Saturday, April 22, 1-4pm
In this workshop, we will introduce participants to the idea of artistic collaboration, why it is valuable, and the different approaches artists can take when working together. We will share our own methods, as well as other ways we have seen artist teams collaborate. During the workshop participants are paired up and challenged to work on a project together in one of the many approaches. It is a fun event that people with and without experience can enjoy. All individuals need to bring is their favorite “making” materials (pencils, watercolors, yarn, etc…) and an open mind. It is a fun way to connect with other artists or take an interesting workshop with their favorite art buddy! Supplies included. More info and registration here!
Sketchbook Collaborations: Saturday, April 29, 1-4pm
In this workshop, we dive deep into the idea of sketchbook sharing with another artist and introduce the class to different methods of sketchbook collaboration. We will also explore how this method works when artist teams live close together versus living long distances from one another. Participants are paired up to start working together in small folio sketchbooks while expressing their own ideas and reacting to each other´s styles. This workshop is for individuals as well as students who would like to take a workshop with their art buddies. More info and registration here!

Maria’s “Internal Dialogue” at VANS Corridor Gallery
Posted November 2, 2016

10 pieces from Maria’s “Internal Dialogues” body of work are on display at the Visual Arts Nova Scotia Corridor Gallery November 2 – December 15, 2016.
About the Exhibition:
What is a person?
Are our bodies filled with a soul?
Is there a separation between body and soul or is it one and the same?
These are questions that have influenced my art-making in the last 4 years. I visualize what fills our body as a vessel, and interpret its many layers, physical and metaphysical, in my artwork. The printmaking process requires a lot of physicality from me. Having allergies and asthma creates another set of obstacles for me as an artist, but I love the physical challenge that printmaking brings. The more arduous, intricate, and repetitive a process is, the more I become engaged with it. Painting on my prints provides the perfect counterbalance to this method, as it takes hours of calm and peaceful work rather than physical exertion.
This quest for visualizing the lacery of people around me started with first trying to understand inner workings of my body. I imagine hundreds of layers of patterns and textures that are intricate, dense and beautiful. Each portrait of a woman is someone I have connected with over the years. I am always drawn to strong, determined, independent women, each with their own story and personality. Their portraits are what I see as an outside observer, and how these women present themselves to the world. The layers of lacery are a representation of what is below the surface and what the viewer cannot readily see. This combination is what makes each woman who she is and is the essence of her being.

Join us for another fun day of printmaking at Visual Voice. Colour Monotype is a very experimental and direct process of image creation through the use of printmaking equipment. You will not be creating an edition of multiples but instead remove ink from a plate with various rags, Q-tips, and brushes and found materials to create a single print. You may create up to 10 different images during this workshop using multiple colours as well as multiple layers.
You can come prepared with an image idea or spend the day experimenting with found materials with this much more direct and painterly printmaking technique. You do not need previous knowledge of printmaking to participate in this workshop. Please bring an apron or old t-shirt and any thin/flat found materials like dried leaves, thread, paper cut outs. If you can’t think of anything, not to worry, there will be materials supplied as well.
If the weather is forecast to be beautiful we are planning on setting up the workshop outside next to the gallery, in case of rain it will be inside the gallery space.
The instructor is artist and printmaker Maria Doering, who teaches at NSCAD and has taught 2 other workshops at Visual Voice. *Includes the use of a press!

Maria Launches New Online Shop
Posted February 6, 2016
Maria is proud and excited to launch her new, customised online shop, accessible here. Maria had been using Etsy for her online store for several years, but with their evolution away from handmade and fine art goods her work has not fit into their direction for quite a while. After looking at a few options, the decision was made to build something from the ground up, and today it is ready to share with the world. Please check it out!
