Enveloped Evolution: Honourable Mention in 5th Tokyo Screen Print Biennale

Enveloped Evolution, a screen print completed by Maria in early 2015, has been selected as an Honourable Mention in the 5th Tokyo Screen Print Biennale, sponsored by NBC Meshtec, and will be included in the exhibition catalog available early next year. The competition is an international and open event focused exclusively on screen prints.

Fragmentation, Re-Formation and Wholeness at the Craig Gallery in Dartmouth

Maria’s triptych of 8 foot linocuts, Fragmentation, Re-Formation, and Wholeness, is on display at the Craig Gallery in Dartmouth from 5-29 November as part of the Nocturne follow-up show “The Outside of Healing”. This piece has been displayed in Montréal, Calgary and Seattle, and is one of Maria’s signature works.

The Outside of Healing features work from local artists Joey Poirier, Zara Leblanc and Rose Adams, as well as a selection of works from the ongoing NS Printmakers exhibition. The Craig Gallery is located in Alderney Landing, 2 Ochterloney St., Dartmouth, NS.

Inside Me at the ICCA

Maria’s fabric installation piece, Inside Me, is being displayed at the Inverness County Centre for the Arts as part of the Structures contemporary fibre art show , opening on Sunday, 27 September 2015 and running through to 18 October. Inside Me, completed in 2009, is a site specific installation which is here free standing in the centre of the gallery, in a way it has never been exhibited before.

In addition to Maria’s piece, visitors to the gallery will see a selection of twenty five artworks created by nineteen SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) Atlantic Chapter members. It is a wonderful showcase of some of the finest textile art talent in the Atlantic Canada region. Artists include Penny Berens, Sandra Betts, Grace Butland, Nancy Elaschuk, Linda Mackie Finley, Lois Wilby Hooper, Susan Lilley, Heather Loney, Kate Madeloso, Regina Marzlin, Holly McLean, Anne Morrell Robinson, Christine Nielsen, ReBecca Paterson, Deb Plestid, Ann Schroeder, Linda Strowbridge, Céleste Thibodeau-Stacey, and Susan Tilsley Manley.

NS Printmakers Touring Exhibition – Opening at the Linc Gallery in Lunenburg

Months and months of hard work have been poured into the inaugural NS Printmakers print exchange, and it all comes to fruition this Saturday, 12 September, with the first of nine gallery shows opening at the Linc Gallery in Lunenburg, NS. Featuring the work of 25 printmakers from Nova Scotia, this exhibition explores the culture of local and local culture in the Maritimes, as interpreted by both locals and those “from away.”

In addition to leading the organization of the exchange and touring exhibition, Maria has a new piece in the show entitled “Creative Energies at Alderney Landing.” This is her first new lithography (combined with silkscreen) to be created in quite a while, and for now can only be seen in person during the touring exhibition. Devon and Bird at Visual Voice Realism Show in Truro

Maria is very happy to be one of 10 artists included in Visual Voice’s Realism Group Show opening Saturday, 12 September as Visual Voice Fine Art in Truro, NS. The show runs through to 10 October. The opening is free and open to the public, and will feature live Celtic music by John DeCoste (guitar & vocals) and Twila Robar-DeCoste (harp). On display will be Devon and Bird, a large monotype created in 2009 which is being publicly displayed for the first time.

Summer Show at Visual Voice in Truro

Maria is pleased to be including in a group show featuring 13 Nova Scotia artists at Visual Voice in Truro, opening 8 August and running through to 5 September 2015.

Visual Voice Fine Art presents its annual ‘Summer’ Show, a new group art exhibit around sun, flowers, fish, green fields, and all things summery. Featuring the distinct styles of artists: Kath Kornelsen, Tae Hee Kim, Ian Stainwright, Carol Morrison, Maria Doering, Ellen Moershel, Judy Arsenault, Leya Evelyn, Eliza Schurman, Judith J. Leidl, Rosa Carr, Kristiina Lehtonen, and Robert Rutherford. A wide range of media will be on display: oil and acrylic painting, screenprint and linocut, encaustic and mixed media, sculpture and more. A happy mismatch, a collage of styles and media, with a sunny disposition.

Enveloped Evolution and Calming Force at ICCA

The Inverness County Centre for the Arts annual member show, Hands Dancing, runs from 5-26 July in Inverness, Nova Scotia. Maria has two pieces featured in the exhibit, Enveloped Evolution and Calming Force, both part of a new body of screenprints which she continues to work on.

Look for more of Maria’s work at the ICCA in the coming months, as her fabric installation piece “Inside Me” will be installed this fall as part of the Structures: Interpretations in Textiles quilt show, and the NS Printmakers exchange and travelling exhibit, A Sense of Belonging, will be at the ICCA in 2016.

Abstract Group Show at Visual Voice in Truro

Maria is one of nine featured artists in Abstract, a group show at Visual Voice Fine Art in Truro, NS, running from 27 June to 27 July 2015, with an opening reception on Saturday, 27 June from 7-9 pm. Swoon Mini in downtown Halifax

Maria has a number of pieces included in Swoon Mini, running for the months of June and July at Mojo Art Studio, 1590 Argyle Street, in downtown Halifax. This will include the first public exhibition of her Cellular Formations series, a body of work consisting of series of pen and ink drawings.

Maria in Pop-up Swoon Show: No Place Like Home

Maria will be included in Swoon’s first juried show of 2015, No Place Like Home, running 30 April to 31 May 2015 at the Craig Gallery in Dartmouth, with an opening reception the evening of 29 April starting at 7pm. Two new screenprints, Calming Forces and Enveloped Evolution, will be publicly displayed for the first time.

In addition to Maria’s work, this juried show features the work of:

Endless Possibilities Group Show at ARTzone Halifax

ARTzone Halifax, a new gallery at 1673 Barrington Street in downtown Halifax, is currently displaying three of Maria’s paintings (Valérie, Kelsey and Sophie) as part of the Endless Possibilities group show and competition. The show features work from a dozen local artists and is on display until 9 April 2015, when it will end with an awards gala starting 6pm.

Visual Voice Fine Art in Truro, NS

Visual Voice Fine Art in Truro, NS, is the newest gallery representing Maria Doering’s work. A selection of recent work, including lithos, linos, and mixed media paintings are available at the gallery now, and Maria is one of the featured artists in the 2014 Christmas show, on until 24 December 2014.

Maria was invited by the lovely Kristina Sobstad to have some of her work exhibited at a pop-up exhibition in Bedford, NS. Studio S is temporarily located in a store front and will offer yoga lessons and an excellent group show with many works for sale. The show opens Friday November 21st and will run until the end of December.

Internal Dialogues – Full Show at Swoon Gallery

Maria’s most recent body of work, titled Internal Dialogues, will be displayed at Swoon Fine Art and Antiques in Hammonds Plains, NS, from the 6th to 28th of September 2014. The vernissage will be Saturday, September 6th from 2-5 pm. It is open to the public and free of charge.

Maria’s work will be displayed along with a series of abstracts from Colin Hill, and stone sculptures from Jan Hull. Internal Dialogues consists of the pattern portraits of Asima, Anne-Marie and Sophie, available on the website, three new portraits (Valérie, Fiona and Kelsey), and many smaller pieces.

Breathe and Beneath the Surface in Understorey Magazine

Understorey Magazine, a project of the Second Story Women’s Centre (SSWC) in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, publishes stories of mothering and motherhood from Nova Scotia. They have recently published two of my pieces to accompany poetry in their Winter 2014 and Spring 2014 editions.

Inside Me at the NSPA's 5th Annual Exhibition

My linocut on fabric installation piece, Inside Me, will be on display from 5-29 November 2013 at the Public Archives, Chase Exhibition Room, in Halifax, NS. For this installation, the piece is installed on two large, swinging doors. This is part of the Nova Scotia Printmakers Association’s 2013 Annual Exhibition, featuring more than one hundred pieces from printmakers all across Nova Scotia. The official opening is 16 November 1-3:30 pm.

Maria will be participating in the 2013 Avondale Art Fair, in Avondale, NS, on 15 June 2013. New and old prints and paintings will be available by Maria, as well as a huge selection of art from over 100 participating artists.

Always held the third Saturday in June, you can be sure that you will find exceptional juried art that includes paintings, jewellery, pottery, glass, sculpture, fibre, leather, photography and more. Food vendors will entice you with their unique fair offerings and a talented array of local musicians will perform on-stage throughout the day. The fun begins at 10 am and runs until 5 pm.

The Craig Gallery at Alderney Landing is running a fundraiser from 28 November to 19 December 2012 entitled Final Vinyl, featuring dozens of new pieces of art on old vinyl records. My piece “Vital Layers,” completed specifically for this show, is on display until 19 December. This is my first completed piece to feature any knitting, which may begin to show up more and more in future works. Come by and check it out!

Fragmentation, Reformation and Wholeness at Cullom Gallery, Seattle, WA

My 8 foot linocuts, part of the Aufloesung series of work, is on display at the Cullom Gallery in Seattle from 3 May to 2 June 2012, as part of Brian Lane’s “Texture of Being” show. Brian runs the outstanding Print Zero Studios in Seattle and has the finest beard a print enthusiast could hope for.

 

Anne-Marie at The McClure Gallery, Westmount, QC

The McClure Gallery, which is part of the Westmount Visual Arts Centre, is displaying a new piece of mine entitled “Anne-Marie” as part of their Square Affair/Art au Carré fundraiser from 22 to 26 November, 2011. All pieces in this exhibition (and there are a lot!) are square. This piece is the first in a planned series of Pattern Portraits, which will combine beautiful portraits of young women with my pattern work. This particular piece is 3′ square and on wood.
