Resoluions Monotype Workshop on Dec 29 at Visual Voice Fine Art
The year in review. In this Reflections and Resolutions Monotype Workshop you will be developing imagery that symbolizes what mattered to you in 2016 and your hopes and dreams for 2017. While taking a break from Holiday parties and preparations for New Year’s Eve this workshop is a perfect one-day meditation allowing you to look inward and express your ideas through the painterly method of Monotype printmaking. You will not be creating an edition of multiples but instead remove ink from a plate with various rags, Q-tips, and brushes and found materials to create a single print. This time we will be using larger plates than in previous workshops. Participants can expect to create 2-5 different prints during this workshop. Introducing the Maritime Centre for Contemporary Print

Posted on on May 30, 2016

The Maritime Centre for Contemporary Print (MCCP) is going to be a professional quality fine art printmaking studio and cultural hub to be located in downtown Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. It is going to focus on the production and dissemination of contemporary fine art printmaking, with a vision of being an international centre for print excellence in Eastern Canada.

The MCCP studio will be open to the public through a membership program and will be equipped with professional quality equipment for the various printmaking techniques, including lithography, relief printing, intaglio, serigraphy (fine art silkscreen), letterpress, and monotype. Members will have access to the studio equipment, and regular courses will provide instruction on the various types of printmaking.

The MCCP will host residencies of international artists, with the objective of both providing top quality studio space to the artist while also bringing top quality international artists to Dartmouth, the HRM, and Nova Scotia to both work and share their expertise with the community.

Finally, the MCCP gallery will be the only gallery space in the Maritimes dedicated entirely to printmaking, and will be a key component of the Centre’s mandate to engage with the wider community.

Maria is the President, Executive Director, and co-founder, with her husband, of the Maritime Centre for Contemporary Print. The centre is currently in the start-up phase and is expected to be open in the next year or so. For now, you can assist by completing a short market analysis survey for the centre, available here. The survey will also allow you to submit your email to be added to our mailing list, to be kept up-to-date as we proceed towards opening this hub for printmaking excellence on the beautiful eastern coast of Canada.

Collaboration Workshops

Posted on on May 23, 2016

Shared Energies Workshops

As part of their collaborative residency at the I.C.C.A. Fiona Chinkan and Maria Doering are offering two workshops all about Artistic Collaborations!

RESIDENCY EVENT SCHEDULE:

Tuesday, May 31st – Artistic Collaborations 101
(Min. 5 participants – Max 20 participants,  6-9 pm)
In this workshop, we will introduce participants to the idea of artistic collaboration, why it is valuable and the different approaches artists can take when working together. We will share our own methods, as well as other ways we have seen artist teams collaborate. During the workshop participants will be paired up and challenged to work on a project together in one of the many approaches. This will be a fun event that anyone can take part in with or without experience. All you need to bring is your favourite “making” materials (pencils, watercolors, yarn, etc…) and an open mind. It is a fun way to connect with other artists or take an interesting workshop with your favourite art buddy!
Wednesday, June 1st – Sketchbook Collaborations
(Min. 5 participants – Max 20 participants, 2 – 5 pm)
One wonderful artistic collaboration method that we will discuss in our first workshop is sketchbook sharing with another artist. In this workshop, we will dive deeper into this approach and you will be introduced to different methods of sketchbook collaboration and explore how this method works when artist teams live close together versus apart long distance. Participants will be paired up to start working together in small folio sketchbooks while expressing their own ideas and reacting to each other’s styles. This workshop works well on your own or to sign up with your art buddy.
To reserve your spot for one or both workshops please contact the I.C.C.A. at [email protected] and by phone at 902.258.2533
Friday June 3rd 6-8 pm – Open Studio Event
Open to the public!
During this small informal reception, we would like to ask the public to come and visit us in the studio to see the results of our week long collaboration project in residence. We will briefly talk about the origins of our work and what it is like to live in separate countries while still making art together.

"Shared Energies" – Residency

Shared Energies Poster

FIONA CHINKAN & MARIA DOERING
Studio Residency from May 28th – June 4th, 2016
At The Inverness County Centre for the Arts, Inverness, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The Inverness County Centre for the Arts is pleased to present: Shared Energies: Cells, Stars and the Fluidity Between, a collaborative residency project between New York City based artist Fiona Chinkan and Dartmouth, NS based artist Maria Doering. Having known each other for over 12 years, Fiona and Maria are reunited in the studio for the first time since 2007 to work on a large format collaborative drawing project in the spacious studio space at the I.C.C.A. between May 28th and June 4th, 2016.

The two women have collaborated through different approaches over the years, and have exhibited work together in New Jersey and Connecticut under the show title Retrospective on Intimacy. During their stay at the I.C.C.A., they will be continuing a drawing collaboration that began two years ago and has continued through mailing their drawings back and forth between New York City and Dartmouth. Maria and Fiona will be elaborating on an artistic conversation, merging and reacting to both of their notions of space. Fiona interprets imagery of outer space while Maria explores the inner space of the human body. Their work juxtaposes the formation of star systems with human cellular structures while laying in emotional complexities. Their unique styles intertwine and merge in an unexpected explosion of energy through pen and ink on paper. The artist duo will take this energy and push their explorations to larger scale during their residency stay in Inverness.

During their stay they will be offering a series of workshops at the I.C.C.A. around the idea of artist collaborations and are excited to share their experience and energy with anyone interested. Please find details below.

Everyone is welcome to stop by the studio and say hello. The best time to see much of the weeks progress will be during their open studio event on Friday, June 3rd, from 6-8pm.

If you are in the Truro area please stop into Visual Voice Gallery and see Maria’s piece as well as work by the following artists:

“Visual Voice Fine Art gallery presents “HOME” a group art show around the theme of belonging and place. Artists Twila Robar-DeCoste, Louise Baker, Lynn Johnson, Diana Baldwin, Maria Doering, Carol Morrison, Betty-Anne Gaetz, Ed Porter, Carol Smeraldo, Judy Arsenault, Kath Rutherford, Nora Gross, and introducing Joanne Solway, interpret the theme in their own way with some surprising results.

Maria Launches New Online Shop

Posted on on February 6, 2016

Maria is proud and excited to launch her new, customised online shop, accessible here. Maria had been using Etsy for her online store for several years, but with their evolution away from handmade and fine art goods her work has not fit into their direction for quite a while. After looking at a few options, the decision was made to build something from the ground up, and today it is ready to share with the world. Please check it out!

Maria in Residency at Zea Mays Printmaking

Posted on on November 21, 2015

Early this year, Maria was invited to Zea Mays Printmaking in Florence, Massachusetts, to complete a 2 week residency and to print editions of a number of large linocuts which she has been working on for the past couple of years. The residency is nearing completion and she has an entirely new body of work which will hopefully be shown over the next several years.

Zea Mays was established in 2000 and is a studio, workshop, gallery, educational facility and research center dedicated to the safest and most sustainable printmaking practices available. Maria specifically sought out Zea Mays for this residency as it is quite similar to the vision for the Maritime Centre for Contemporary Print, which she will be opening in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in the near future.
